Transport operators threaten 20% fare increase over poor state of Kasoa–Winneba road
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana have warned that transport fares on the Kasoa–Winneba route will increase by 20 per cent if urgent repairs are not carried out on the road.
In a joint press release issued on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, the transport operators expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of the Kasoa–Winneba Road, describing it as a major challenge for drivers and commuters.
According to the statement, the two groups had, during a demonstration on 12 June 2026, given the government a two-week ultimatum to undertake repair works on the road.
They said that as of 24 June, no significant work had been carried out, adding that the road continues to cause vehicle damage, increased fuel consumption and prolonged travel delays.
The transport operators warned that if no action is taken, transport fares on the route will be increased by 20 per cent from Monday, 29 June 2026.
They explained that the proposed fare adjustment is intended to offset the additional costs incurred by drivers, including higher fuel consumption, vehicle maintenance expenses and the use of alternative routes.
The groups appealed to the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to take immediate action to address the condition of the road.
They also appealed to commuters for understanding, stating that the planned fare increase is aimed at protecting the livelihoods of transport operators and maintaining their vehicles.
The statement was signed by the National Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah; GPRTU Communications Members Eric Larty Lamptey and Ben Boahen; and the National Chairman of the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, Asonaba Nana Wiredu.
