Gov't launches HOTCATT-ABE Certification to build global competitive tourism workforce
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has launched HOTCATT-ABE Certification and Diploma Programmes in Tourism and Hospitality, a new partnership aimed at equipping Ghanaians with internationally recognised qualifications.
The launch, held in Accra under the theme “Building a Globally Competitive Tourism Workforce: Advancing Skills, Professionalism and International Qualifications” was read on behalf of the Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, by her Deputy Minister, Yussif Issaka Jajah.
Addressing dignitaries including the British Council, ABE Global, HOTCATT management, and industry leaders, Hon. Yussif said the programmes represent a “strategic investment in Ghana's human capital”.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama’s government has prioritised tourism under the flagship Black Star Experience initiative which seeks to reposition Ghana as Africa’s preferred destination for culture, heritage, festivals, and diaspora engagement.
The Deputy Minister stressed the need for inclusivity, urging that young people, women, and persons with disabilities be given equal access to tourism training.
She also called on industry players to offer internships, mentorship, and jobs to graduates.
Closing the launch, he said: “May this initiative produce a new generation of highly skilled professionals who will transform Ghana's tourism and hospitality industry and proudly represent our nation on the global stage.”
The Acting Director of HOTCATT, Dr. Eric Kofi Afornorpe also said the partnership with UK-based ABE Global will allow Ghanaians to obtain qualifications recognised in 70 countries without leaving the country.
He added that the programmes combine practical industry skills with business, leadership, and entrepreneurship training with clear pathways to bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
“Admission is now open for lectures commencing in October. We will work with hotels and tourism facilities nationwide for major enrollments,” Dr. Afornorpe announced.
HOTCATT, established in 1991, is Ghana’s premier institution for training chefs, tour guides, hotel managers, and hospitality professionals.
The institute is also pursuing accreditation with CTVET and MoUs with all Technical Universities in Ghana.
Development partners including the British Council were commended for supporting skills development and international collaboration.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ghana Tourism Authority, GTDC, GHATOF, GHA, and all 13 agencies under the Ministry.
