Sugarcane farmers urge revival of Komenda Sugar Factory
The Sugarcane Farmers Association of Ghana has extended warm congratulations to President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President-elect Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on their victory in the 2024 presidential election.
In a statement signed by the Association’s Public Relations Officer, Okatakyi Nana Kweku Ackon, the farmers expressed optimism that the return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to power signals a revival of the Komenda Sugar Factory, a flagship project initiated by the previous Mahama-led administration.
“We are highly hopeful that this victory is also a victory for our Association due to your commitment to operationalize the Komenda Sugar Factory,” the statement read.
The Association highlighted that during the previous NDC administration, arrangements were made to secure a loan from the Exim Bank of India to expand the raw material base for the factory.
This initiative was expected to benefit out-grower farmers significantly and improve their livelihoods.
However, they noted with concern that the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government abandoned the project and failed to access the loan.
The Association urged the incoming administration to prioritize securing the loan and reviving the factory, which they believe will boost the local economy and create jobs.
“We would like to suggest to the incoming administration to engage all stakeholders, appoint an efficient board of directors, and appoint a competent management team to make this dream a reality,” the statement continued.
Additionally, the Association proposed the establishment of a National Sugar Board to regulate and harness the full potential of Ghana’s sugar industry.
The farmers emphasized the historical significance of the Komenda Sugar Factory, noting that it was established under Mahama’s leadership and is situated in the hometown of Vice President-elect Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
They expressed confidence that the factory will soon become operational, creating employment opportunities for the youth in the area.
“We are highly hopeful that the incoming NDC administration has no reason to fail the people of Komenda,” the statement concluded while calling for divine guidance for the new government as it assumes office.
