Cape Coast, Elmina Castles to operate until 10pm under 24-hour economy plan
The Cape Coast and Elmina Castles will now remain open until 10 p.m. as part of measures to expand tourism activities under the government’s 24-hour economy programme.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, announced the extended operating hours on Monday, August 10, 2026, during the Government Accountability Series.
She said the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) had successfully tested evening tours at the two historic sites before introducing the extended schedule.
According to the Minister, the initiative will give tourists and other visitors the opportunity to explore the castles beyond the traditional daytime hours.
Ms Gomashie said extending access to the heritage sites was part of efforts to broaden tourism opportunities and support the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
She explained that the night-tour initiative is expected to create additional opportunities for tourism-related businesses while allowing more people to experience Ghana’s historical attractions outside conventional visiting hours.
The Minister said the move also forms part of broader efforts to increase the use of Ghana’s heritage sites and stimulate tourism activity into the evening.
The Cape Coast and Elmina Castles are among Ghana’s major historical attractions and key sites associated with the country’s transatlantic slave trade history.
