Celestine Donkor advocates for year-round celebration of Ghanaian culture
Award-winning gospel singer Celestine Donkor has praised March as her favourite month of the year, highlighting the focus it brings to Ghanaian music and culture.
She made the remarks during an interview on No.1 FM’s GospelShow Bizz, hosted by Taller Dee.
Donkor noted that while she is not a March-born, the month holds special significance because of the attention given to Ghanaian talent.
“I even wonder why it is only in March that we celebrate this.
For me, it should be more than just a month,” she said.
She emphasised that Ghanaian songs receive massive airplay during March, but expressed concern that promoting local talent only for a single month is limiting.
The singer also suggested ways to expand the celebration, including a nationwide tradition where officials wear African clothing throughout the month.
“I pray that our President Mahama will declare that in this month, no one should wear anything official but African clothes. That would be a big business boost for the nation,” she said.
Donkor further encouraged citizens to show pride in the country by displaying the national flag at their homes.
“Can we increase the love and care for our nation?
People admire us from afar, but we, as Ghanaians, are not maximising that love for ourselves,” she added.
Celestine described Ghana Month as a special period that fosters national pride and opportunities for growth, and called for continued celebration beyond March.
