Obama-produced 'The Eyes of Ghana' shines spotlight on independence legacy at Toronto Black History Month screenings
Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and independence legacy took center stage in Toronto during special Black History Month screenings of the documentary The Eyes of Ghana.
The event, hosted at the Toronto Pan Afrikan Film Festival, highlighted the enduring impact of Ghana's first President Kwame Nkrumah and invited the diaspora to reconnect with Ghanaian history.
The screenings were attended by Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MoTCCA), Abla Dzifa Gomashie, alongside Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh.
Serving as special guest of honour, the minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to cultural diplomacy and encouraged members of the diaspora to experience the country’s history and culture firsthand.
The documentary features rare archival footage shot by renowned filmmaker Chris Hesse, produced by Nana Adwoa Frimpong, directed by Ben Proudfoot, and executive produced by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.
Following its Canadian debut, The Eyes of Ghana is scheduled for screening in Ghana in April 2026, continuing efforts to preserve and promote authentic African narratives on the global stage.
