TGMAs 2025: King Promise recalls hard road to AoTY victory, promises continued ‘consistency’

Singer King Promise (KP) has said he is not slowing down after lifting the biggest trophy in Ghanaian entertainment.
The 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) took place on Saturday, May 10, at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). During this 26th anniversary, KP was crowned the Artiste of the Year (AoTY), an honour announced as the ultimate and last for the event. While he was optimistic he would win last year, it was to be this year.
“I was very hopeful I was going to win, so I couldn't wait for it to materialise and I am glad it did,” he told Graphic Showbiz.
“Truthfully, it feels great and the love from my fans and Ghanaians has been overwhelming. I appreciate Ghana for acknowledging my hard work in the year under review and giving me the highest mandate to continue being the Ambassador of Ghana's music to the rest of the world.”
He reacted to the notion some Artiste of the Year winners became complacent after their victory.
“That will definitely not be my story. I’m putting my foot on the gas, and my consistency over the years speaks for itself,” the Paris hitmaker said.
“Even before the awards on Saturday, I have been out there working. I just got back home from a tour. I have been to Washington, Boston, New York and other places to keep the work going. I won’t relax and it won't stop.
“My team and I will keep pushing Ghana music to the furthest corners in the world.”
King Promise was introduced into the mainstream via a 2017 hit titled Oh Yeah. In 2018, he was nominated for seven awards at the Ghana Music Awards, then title-sponsored by Vodafone – he went home empty-handed. He was trolled on social media subsequently.
“No vex, my people. Lol. More work! More music. One love [heart and explosion emoji],” he reacted on Twitter (X).
In 2019, the Afrobeats star was recognised as the Songwriter of the Year for his CCTV hit, featuring Sarkodie and Mugeez. In 2023, the Best Afrobeat/Afropop Artiste of the Year award was bagged by the singer. Some days after the awards show, he told TV3 he had been advised several times to boycott the awards show.
“People say a lot of stuff, it’s up to you to make what you think of it,” he added. “I always went still and performed, even when I didn’t win, I go the next year to perform, It’s about the fans for me.”
Last year, KP increased his momentum winning the Best Afropop Song and Most Popular Song of the Year awards via his viral Terminator song, apart from being declared the Afrobeat/Afropop Artiste of the Year. He had hoped to win the AoTY honour but lost it to Afro-Dancehall star Stonebwoy, whom he bested this year in an intriguing contest.
“This is a big win for me and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Any young person who has a dream should use me as an example of resilience,” Promise fondly remarked to Graphic Showbiz.
“In my first year, I had seven nominations and left to the house with nothing at the end of the night. While some people laughed at me, I just worked harder and today, I am the chosen one.”
King Promise was the most awarded artiste on the night, bagging: Best AfroPop Song, Best Afropop/Afrobeats Artiste, Album/EP of the Year, and Artiste of the Year.
