Gov't urged to respect PR professionals in major World Cup raffle campaign

Following Ghana’s recent World Cup raffle draw launch, industry insiders are stressing the critical role of Public Relations (PR) professionals in shaping effective government communication and national campaigns.

The event, aimed at rallying support for the Black Stars’ journey to the World Cup, was significantly undermined by key oversights, most notably, the failure to consistently highlight its primary objective: raising funds through the raffle.

Despite invitations extended to thousands of bloggers, many failed to include essential details, particularly the support code *899# needed for Ghanaians to actively back the national team.

This omission diluted the campaign’s impact. Media coverage was largely centred on celebrities like Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, rather than the crucial information required to drive participation and national support.

A key question emerges: Can Ghanaians recall the main messages delivered by the Ministers of Sports and Finance?

It's likely not because those messages were not effectively amplified.

This highlights a major gap: the absence of structured PR direction.

The lack of visible involvement from PR officers within the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ministry of Finance was evident, resulting in weak coordination and missed messaging opportunities.

Their expertise in crafting narratives, managing media relations, and ensuring message consistency was sorely missed.

Beyond events, PR plays a vital role in the success of the Ghana national football team, especially during major tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Strong PR strategies help build national unity, manage public expectations, boost player morale, and shape positive narratives around the team.

When communication is well-handled, it can energise fan support, reduce pressure on players, and create an environment where the team can thrive and perform at its best.

Minister for Government Communication, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu understands that even with strong media presence or event planning, no single individual can manage the full scope of communication required for high-profile national initiatives.

Historically, PR teams within government institutions have played indispensable roles in shaping public perception, ensuring message clarity, and mobilising nationwide support.

Their involvement could have significantly enhanced both the reach and effectiveness of the World Cup raffle initiative.

Going forward, Ghana’s government must recognise the importance of fully integrating PR professionals into all major campaigns.

Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu is urged to ensure that PR teams are actively involved in inter-ministerial committees and all strategic communication platforms.

Future initiatives must learn from this experience by prioritising collaboration with PR experts because effective communication is not just supportive.

It is essential to national success, both on and off the pitch.
