6 dead, 34 rescued in multiple road crashes across Volta Region

Six people have died and 34 others were rescued following multiple road traffic accidents in the Volta Region on Sunday, June 21, 2026, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.

The first incidents occurred along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road, where personnel from the Peki Fire Station responded to two separate crashes after receiving a distress call at 12:53 PM.

One of the accidents involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck travelling from Tema to Tamale and a Toyota Camry travelling from Nkwanta to Accra. The five occupants involved in the crash, made up of four men and one woman, had been rescued before firefighters arrived at the scene. Both vehicles sustained partial damage.

The second accident involved a Metro Mass Transit bus travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board. Firefighters rescued 24 victims, comprising seven men and 17 women, and transported them to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment.

Four people, including one man and three women, died at the scene. Their bodies were handed over to the police for preservation and further investigations.

In a separate incident at the Ho Civic Centre, personnel from the Ho Regional Fire Headquarters responded to another crash after receiving a distress call at 1:04 PM.

The accident involved a Hyundai Mighty truck, a Pragya tricycle and an unregistered motorbike.

Ten victims were rescued and transported to the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

The GNFS said follow-up checks at the hospitals later confirmed the deaths of two male victims among the injured.

The vehicles involved in the crashes sustained varying degrees of damage, while investigations are underway to determine the causes of the accidents.

The fire service urged motorists to adhere to road safety regulations, avoid excessive speeding, exercise caution while driving and ensure regular vehicle maintenance to help reduce road traffic crashes.
