Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and NPP presidential aspirant Dr Bryan Acheampong has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind the party and its 2028 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a statement issued on June 19, Dr Acheampong said the party's primary focus should be rebuilding and preparing for a return to power following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

Referencing recent comments by former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, he urged the Assin Central MP to channel his influence towards reconciliation rather than division.

Dr Acheampong acknowledged Mr Agyapong's disappointment following the party's presidential primary and described concerns over insults and attacks directed at him by some party supporters as legitimate.

He noted that some individuals associated with both Dr Bawumia's campaign and his own had made disrespectful remarks about Mr Agyapong during and after the contest.

However, he maintained that there was no evidence that Dr Bawumia directed or endorsed those attacks, arguing that the actions of a few individuals should not be attributed to the party's flagbearer or the NPP as a whole.

The Abetifi MP also called for mutual reconciliation, stating that harsh words were exchanged by supporters on different sides during the primary contest.

He urged party members to move beyond personal grievances and focus on the broader objective of returning the NPP to power in 2028.

According to him, Dr Bawumia now carries the mandate of all party members, including supporters of candidates who contested the presidential primary.

Dr Acheampong appealed to Mr Agyapong, his supporters and party members generally to close ranks behind the flagbearer, stressing that unity would be essential to the NPP's electoral prospects.

"Unity is not weakness. Unity is how we win," he said.
