Education Minister directs GES to crack down on indiscipline in schools
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take firm action against teachers, students and school officials whose conduct falls below accepted professional and ethical standards.
He said the rising cases of misconduct within the education sector threaten discipline in schools and must be addressed through the consistent enforcement of existing rules and codes of conduct.
Speaking at the 2026 GALOP National School Awards on Thursday, July 9, Mr Iddrisu tasked the Director-General of GES, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, to ensure that every act of misconduct is dealt with appropriately and that offenders are held accountable.
The minister’s remarks follow the recent incident at Bole Senior High School, where a teacher was allegedly caught engaging in sexual misconduct with a student inside the school’s science laboratory.
The Ghana Police Service has since launched a manhunt for the teacher, while the Ghana Education Service has suspended his salary after he reportedly absented himself from duty.
Describing the incident as deeply disturbing, Mr Iddrisu urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the matter is prosecuted to discourage similar acts in the future.
“You are empowered to deal decisively with any form of indiscipline in our schools, whether it involves a teacher or a student. There must be consequences for behaviour that violates our accepted norms and professional standards. We must also move from punishment-centred discipline to a more progressive disciplinary approach,” the Minister stated.
