Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye says the credibility of Ghana’s judiciary in the  years ahead will be determined by the character and conduct of judges serving today.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Accra on Friday, July 31, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court on the theme “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Defining the Future,” Apostle Nyamekye said the decisions judges make now will shape public trust for generations.

The Church of Pentecost leader admonished the members of the bench stating that technical knowledge alone is not enough to sustain justice.

He said because judges determine the fate of individuals and institutions, they must be guided by truth, conscience, and strong moral values.

“As judges adjudicating on behalf of God, in passing judgments and determining people’s fate, in determining the truth in every matter, your integrity should not be in question at all,” he stated.

“You should be people supremely concerned about conscience, holding time-tested values and subjecting them to all decisions.”

Apostle Nyamekye also cautioned judges and public officials against allowing personal interest, ambition or pressure to override their principles.

He added that compromising one’s conscience starts small but erodes moral discipline.

“If you violate your conscience, soon it will be mortified, and your conscience will be subjected to great indiscipline, and you will lose all sensitivity and give yourself to all vices,” he stressed, emphasising that values do more than distinguish right from wrong.

“When we live by conscience tied with principles and values, they help us” stay firm in difficult decisions, he added.

The Apostle further said the legacy left by the current generation of judges will define how Ghanaians view the justice system in the future.

He urged the bench, Christians and all public servants to commit to integrity so that the judiciary can continue to be a pillar of national stability and fairness.

The thanksgiving service brought together judges, lawyers and the public to reflect on the 150 years of Ghana’s highest court and to pray for wisdom and strength for the judiciary.
