A/R: Dagombaline squatters rebuild homes after devastating fire
Squatters at Dagombaline in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region, who lost their homes in a massive fire, have begun rebuilding their makeshift shelters, highlighting their urgent need for support.
On Saturday, January 17, 2026, a fierce blaze destroyed hundreds of informal structures at Dagombaline, leaving many residents—mainly scrap dealers and kayayie—homeless and without basic belongings.
The fire also consumed properties valued at hundreds of Ghana cedis.
Residents said they were forced to sleep outside with their children, expressing disappointment that no officials from the Metropolitan Assembly or local politicians had visited or provided aid during the crisis.
Reporting from the scene, Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah observed squatters already attempting to reconstruct their shelters, citing a lack of alternative accommodation.
The affected community has called on the authorities to provide urgent assistance, including temporary shelter, relief materials, and support to rebuild their livelihoods.
One resident appealed, “We have nowhere else to go.
We need help to recover from this disaster and provide for our families.”
