A/R: Lands Minister moves to calm tensions in Asanko Gold dispute

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), has called for calm and assured stakeholders of the government’s determination to swiftly resolve the ongoing impasse between Asanko Gold Ghana Limited and surrounding host communities.
Mr. Buah made the remarks during a working visit to the company’s concession on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The visit followed violent clashes on September 9, which left one community member dead and caused extensive damage to company assets valued at more than US$33 million.
The confrontation reportedly broke out after residents, frustrated by what they described as unfulfilled development commitments, encroached on the concession.
Security forces intervened, sparking further tensions.
Addressing Asanko Gold’s management, the Minister underscored the importance of dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
“As a government, we are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated.
Dialogue and mutual understanding must prevail,” he stated.
He further urged the company to strengthen community engagement, comply fully with mining regulations, and integrate local development priorities into its operations.
As part of his visit, Mr Buah inspected ongoing mining activities before proceeding to the bereaved family of the deceased, who also served as Assembly Member for the area.
The Minister expressed condolences and pledged a transparent investigation into the incident.
Officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and the rComsdep Secretariat accompanied the Minister on the visit.
