AMA distributes ₵106,000 to victims of Accra Central Police Barracks fire
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has provided GH₵106,000 in cash support to victims of the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police Barracks Trading Area in Tudu.
A total of 106 affected traders and residents received GH₵1,000 each during a presentation ceremony at the AMA headquarters on Thursday.
The support follows a visit by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey to the scene, where he assessed the damage and interacted with victims who lost property and goods in the fire.
Addressing beneficiaries, the Mayor said the assistance was intended to help them meet immediate needs as they recover from the disaster. He acknowledged that the amount would not fully cover their losses but expressed hope that it would provide some relief.
Mr Allotey said his visit to the affected area was on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. He assured victims that government would consider further assistance after receiving a detailed assessment report on the incident.
He also urged beneficiaries and the public to be truthful throughout the support distribution process and avoid making false claims, stressing that assistance should reach only those genuinely affected.
The Mayor encouraged victims who were unable to attend the engagement to channel their concerns through their leaders so their details could be captured for future support.
He further expressed concern about unsafe electrical connections and other hazardous conditions observed at the fire scene, warning that such practices could contribute to future outbreaks if left unchecked.
According to him, the Assembly has previously encouraged traders to support efforts aimed at reorganising and redeveloping trading areas to improve safety and reduce the risk of similar incidents.
“The country can only be fixed when citizens cooperate with authorities and conduct themselves responsibly, especially during difficult moments,” he said.
Some beneficiaries thanked the government and the AMA for the support but appealed for additional assistance to help them rebuild their businesses and support their families.
