Ablekuma Central Assembly to begin 3-day decongestion at Old Agbogbloshie market
The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has announced plans to carry out a three-day decongestion operation at the Old Agbogbloshie Onion Market from February 24 to 26, 2026, to remove squatters and persons occupying the area without authorization.
The location was earlier cleared on July 1, 2021, when the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, with security support, demolished structures and displaced thousands of scrap dealers as part of a large-scale sanitation and redevelopment exercise. Despite that operation, scrap dealers have since returned and reoccupied sections of the land.
Speaking to the media during an inspection of the site with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ablekuma Central Municipal Chief Executive, Frank Nkansah, said the upcoming exercise is intended to restore order and enforce directives issued by regional authorities.
He explained that the operation would be carried out in collaboration with other local government bodies and the Regional Coordinating Council to improve the area for road users, traders, and nearby market operators.
Mr. Nkansah noted that the exercise is not aimed at disrupting lawful activities but rather at removing unauthorized structures and activities. He added that measures such as the establishment of a police post and other control mechanisms would be introduced to ensure proper regulation of the area and maintain the Assembly’s authority over the site.
