Kwabena Bempong, Chief Executive Officer of Associated Consultant Ltd, has revealed that the reconstruction and extension of the Accra-Tema Motorway is 50 per cent complete.

He said the completed project will transform the motorway into a 10-lane dual carriageway, comprising three-lane urban highways on either side of the existing motorway. The two inner lanes on each side will retain the concrete surface of the original motorway, while the three new outer lanes will have asphalt surfaces.

The project covers three sections: 19.5 kilometres from Tema to Tetteh Quarshie, 5.7 kilometres from the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to the Apenkwa Interchange, and 2.5 kilometres from Tesano to the Neoplan Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange.

“Since the road will be a 10-lane dual carriageway, there will be 10 footbridges that will be constructed at strategic locations to ease crossing,” Mr Bempong said.

Interchanges and drainage works

He said work on the sub-structure and super-structure of the main Tetteh Quarshie Interchange had been completed.

Three additional interchanges will also be constructed at the Teshie Link, Community 18 Junction and Lashibi.

“We have finished with the concrete works and we are now working on the retaining walls. Once the retaining walls are finished, we will fill over them and then we will open that portion of the road to traffic,” Mr Bempong said.

He said drainage works had been a major focus of the project over the past one-and-a-half years, with about 20 culverts and three bridges included in the works.

All the culverts had been completed as of last week, he said.

The project is designed to last 25 years, requiring the replacement of the steel bridges on the motorway, which have been in place for about 60 years.

Mr Bempong said the replacement was intended to provide the bridges with sufficient structural and hydraulic capacity to withstand flooding.

The project is being executed by Maripoma Enterprise Limited.
