Anti-Galamsey Fight: Akufo-Addo was much stronger than Mahama - MFWA boss

Sulemana Braimah, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) Executive Director, has delivered a stinging assessment of successive governments' fight against illegal mining, accusing both the previous and current administrations of offering little more than empty words while the country's natural resources are ravaged.

"We shouldn't simply look on while the future of our country and future generations is being destroyed," he said, speaking on Joy News' “AM Show”.

Braimah did not spare either side of the political aisle as he rebuked successive governments for making only "fanciful promises" and showing weak commitment in the fight against galamsey.

He strikingly argued that the current NDC administration has fallen even shorter than its predecessor.

"I think it is saddening to see that after the NPP's failures, we brought in the NDC and so far I won't say that the government of the day has made any serious and realistic commitments towards the fight against galamsey," he said.

He went further, drawing a direct comparison between the two administrations' public posture on the crisis.

"If anything at all, Akufo-Addo was much more stronger in terms of the rhetoric [against galamsey] than the Mahama regime," he said.

The comments add to a renewed concerns from civil society voices over the pace and seriousness of government action against illegal mining, an issue that continues to threaten forest reserves, water bodies, and livelihoods across the country.
