Construction resumes at La General hospital, raising hopes for 2027 completion

Construction work on the long-delayed La General Hospital has gained momentum, nearly three months after President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed his government's commitment to completing the project.

The renewed activity has rekindled optimism among residents, many of whom have endured years without a major public health facility serving the La enclave and surrounding communities.

During a visit to the site on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, construction workers and engineers were seen undertaking major structural works, including the casting of concrete pillars and completion of the roof slab for the building's third floor. Masonry works were also progressing across different sections of the facility, suggesting that multiple phases of the project are advancing simultaneously.

President Mahama inspected the project on April 24, 2026, where he assured residents that the hospital would be completed and commissioned by November 2027 after years of stalled construction.

The demolition of the old La General Hospital in 2020 left residents of La, Teshie, Nungua and nearby communities without a key referral facility, forcing patients—including pregnant women, children, the elderly and emergency cases—to seek treatment at more distant hospitals such as Ridge Hospital and LEKMA Hospital.

For many residents, the visible progress on the project signals the prospect of improved access to healthcare, reduced travel time during emergencies and a reduction in pressure on other health facilities within the Greater Accra Region.

A resident, speaking to Class News  expressed confidence that the contractor could meet the completion timeline, describing the recent pace of work as encouraging.

Despite the renewed optimism, some community members have raised concerns that progress has slowed in recent weeks. They claim a number of workers have been laid off due to funding challenges following the President's visit, a situation they fear could affect the project's delivery schedule.

Another resident, identified as Madam Anabel, alleged that construction activity has reduced over the past month because of financial constraints affecting the workforce.

Once completed, the new La General Hospital is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region by increasing bed capacity, expanding specialist medical services and strengthening emergency healthcare for thousands of residents.
