UTAG suspends intended strike following progress in government talks
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has resolved not to commence its intended industrial action on Monday, 6 July 2026, as previously scheduled.
The decision follows significant progress in high-level negotiations with the government, including the formal signing of an Interim Salary Adjustment Agreement.
Key Agreements Reached
In a national update issued on 4 July 2026, UTAG leadership revealed that recent engagements have yielded concrete milestones regarding their outstanding Conditions of Service:
- Salary Adjustment: The Interim Salary Adjustment Agreement was officially signed on 2 July 2026, with implementation taking effect from 1 July 2026.
- Financial Commitments: Following a meeting with the Minister for Finance on 3 July 2026, the government provided firm assurances to resolve outstanding issues, including the payment of promotion arrears and outstanding Online Tertiary Subscription Allowance (OTSA) obligations for the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), research fellows, and librarians.
- Administrative Resolutions: Assurances were also given regarding placement concerns affecting some University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) staff, as well as post-retirement and roll-over challenges. Official implementation letters and directives are expected to be finalised and issued within the coming week.
Strike Mandate Remains Active
UTAG emphasised that the suspension of the strike is not a relaxation of its stance but an act of good faith to allow the government to execute its commitments within the agreed timelines.
The association noted that the overwhelming mandate to strike, granted by members during a recent referendum, remains fully valid and intact.
The statement, signed by UTAG National President Prof. Vera O. Fiador and National Secretary Dr Samuel Kingsford Seglah, warned that leadership will not hesitate to reactivate the strike if the government fails to honour its commitments.
"Should implementation not proceed as assured, NEC will communicate, without further delay, a new date for the commencement of industrial action," the secretariat stated, urging members to remain calm, united, and vigilant while continuing their official duties.
