The King and Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, also known as Gariba II, has died.

His passing was announced on Monday, July 13, 2026, by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, following the performance of traditional customary rites and the sounding of the talking drums at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

Yaa Naa Abukari II was enskinned on January 18, 2019, bringing to an end a chieftaincy vacancy and dispute that lasted for about 16 years following the death of his predecessor, Yaa Naa Yakubu II, in 2002.

His enskinment followed efforts to resolve the long-running conflict between the Abudu and Andani royal gates and marked the restoration of the Dagbon Kingship.

During his reign, Yaa Naa Abukari II was associated with efforts to promote peace, reconciliation and stability within the Dagbon Kingdom.

Customary burial preparations are currently underway at the Gbewaa Palace in accordance with Dagbon tradition.

The processes leading to the succession of a new Yaa Naa are expected to be announced after the completion of the traditional rites.
