The New Patriotic Party’s five presidential hopefuls have formally committed to a peaceful internal contest by endorsing a peace agreement ahead of the party’s flagbearer election slated for January 31, 2026.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The initiative is intended to promote calm, openness and credibility throughout the party’s presidential selection process.

Each of the aspirants signed the document, pledging to uphold peace and restraint throughout the campaign period, on election day and after the declaration of results.

Addressing the gathering, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emphasised the importance of solidarity, cautioning that the party’s interest must supersede individual ambitions or group loyalties. He encouraged members and contestants alike to prioritise unity for the overall progress of the party.

Chairman of the NPP Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, also called on the aspirants to fully respect the outcome of the January 31 poll and to rally behind the winner to maintain cohesion within the party.

Similarly, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, urged the candidates to close ranks after the contest, noting that internal harmony would be essential for electoral success in the 2028 general elections.

The ceremony was attended by several senior party figures and state officials, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Joseph Osei Owusu, Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders Hackman Owusu Agyemang, Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, former Chief Justice Akosua Frema Osei Opare, and other party executives.

The five contenders in the NPP presidential race are former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Engineer Kwabena Agyepong.
