Forson opposes 19-member cap on Supreme Court

Supreme Court nominee Anthony Forson Jnr. has opposed proposals to cap the number of justices on Ghana’s Supreme Court at 19.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, he said the proposal could affect the court’s ability to handle its workload because of its broad constitutional jurisdiction.

He argued that a cap should only be considered if the country first reduces the matters that fall under the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.

“So unless as a country we decide to reduce the jurisdictions which have been allocated to the Supreme Court, for now there should be no cap,” he said.

Mr Forson also cited previous increases in the court’s membership, saying they were justified by its workload.

“For now, I disagree that there should be a cap,” he said.
