Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has been remanded in custody by the Akropong Circuit Court over a dispute involving the demolition of a building at Kitase. He is expected to return to court on April 9.

Blay was taken into custody after officers from Accra handed him over to the Akropong Police following the execution of a bench warrant on Monday, March 16, 2026.

The matter stems from claims that the former NPP chairman authorised the demolition of a structure that was under construction on a piece of land located at Kitase.

Reports indicate that the individual who owns the property lodged a complaint with the police, prompting authorities to invite Blay to assist with their investigation. He is said to have failed to respond to the invitation.

Subsequently, formal charges were brought against him, but he reportedly did not appear in court when the case was first scheduled for hearing in April 2025. This led the court to issue a warrant for his arrest, which police carried out on Monday.

However, individuals close to Blay say he had no knowledge of the arrest warrant prior to being detained. According to them, the disagreement revolves around land he bought in 1994 that later became entangled in a legal dispute.

They also argue that Blay did not instruct anyone to pull down a building. Instead, they claim he ordered that the vacant land be cleared in January 2026 to prevent it from becoming a habitat for dangerous animals such as reptiles.

The sources further explained that although the complainant previously secured a ruling in their favour at the High Court in Koforidua, that judgment has since been challenged through an appeal.

They added that efforts to serve the complainant with documents relating to the appeal were unsuccessful. They insist that apart from the ongoing appeal, Blay was unaware of any separate court case involving him until the warrant for his arrest was carried out.
