Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings calls for affordable food services in public institutions
The Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, has called for the integration of affordable food services within major corporate and public institutions across the country.
Presenting a statement on the floor of Parliament, she highlighted the growing difficulty faced by workers in accessing reasonably priced meals during working hours, particularly in large establishments such as hospitals, banks, Ministries and private-sector offices.
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings noted that the absence of structured and affordable food services often forces both workers and vendors into unauthorised spaces, creating congestion and operational challenges within such facilities.
She explained that deliberately incorporating accessible and affordable cafeterias into institutional planning could help address the issue while improving working conditions and productivity.
The MP therefore proposed that key regulatory bodies, including the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Ministry of Local Government Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), develop clear guidelines to support the inclusion of food courts in large-scale developments.
She suggested that such provisions be made part of planning approval requirements to ensure that future infrastructure projects cater for the welfare needs of workers.
