GA/R: 3 of 16 unsafe structures in Accra demolished; Tema Kaiser Flats next, declares NADMO
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has announced that three out of 16 structurally compromised buildings earmarked for demolition across the Greater Accra Region have been successfully pulled down.
The structural interventions follow a directive by the Ministry for the Interior and NADMO regional directorates to aggressively identify and remove high-risk structures before they cause catastrophic collapses or loss of life.
The demolition exercises were accelerated in the region after a series of structural failures highlighted the urgent danger posed by poorly maintained or ageing properties. Among the completed operations was the demolition of a severely compromised multi-storey building in Osu, where three floors had already collapsed, leaving the remaining framework at immediate risk of complete failure.
Evacuations Ahead of Next Phases
With three structures already cleared, NADMO officials are systematically executing evacuation plans for the remaining thirteen high-risk sites.
The state agency revealed that the next major target on its public safety agenda is the Kaiser Flats, located in Tema Community Four. The residential blocks have long been flagged by technical teams as structurally weak and entirely unfit for human habitation due to extensive concrete degradation, heavy rusting of structural iron rods, and severe structural cracking.
NADMO is collaborating closely with metropolitan assemblies, local government engineers, and the Ghana National Fire Service to handle the forced evacuations and technical structural leveling.
A Strict Push for Building Regulations
The ongoing region-wide crackdown has been strongly backed by the government, which emphasized that natural disasters can be unpredictable, but human-built structures that deteriorate into "death traps" must be proactively managed by state authorities.
The Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Dennis Nartey Adjannor, has reiterated calls for the general public and local residents to actively assist structural inspectors. Citizens are urged to identify and formally report any private or commercial buildings displaying deep cracks, exposed concrete reinforcements, or structural tilting so that proper integrity assessments can be carried out before enforcement actions are taken.
