GA/R: Ga North Assembly, NADMO, Forestry Commission lead tree-planting drive under Green Ghana Initiative

The Ga North Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Forestry Commission, has launched a large-scale tree-planting exercise as part of the national Green Ghana initiative.
A total of 5,000 seedlings—comprising coconut, palm, and orange trees—were planted across the municipality to promote environmental sustainability and combat climate change.
The exercise was carried out in key locations, including the Ofankor community, Ga North Municipal Hospital, and Asofan M/A Basic School.
As part of the effort to involve the youth, over 2,000 seedlings were distributed to students to be planted at their homes, reinforcing their role in safeguarding the environment.
Speaking at the launch, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Akwetey Agbo, underscored the urgent need to address environmental degradation, especially the destruction caused by illegal mining activities (galamsey).
He called for collective responsibility in restoring lost vegetation through tree planting.
“Our environment is under threat. Galamsey has wreaked havoc on our lands and water bodies.
We must act now by planting trees to reclaim and protect what we are losing,” Mr. Agbo stated.
The Director of NADMO, Mr. Samuel Arku Nii Laryea, also spoke at the event, emphasising the detrimental effects of global warming on vegetation, water sources, and food crops.
He urged residents to take proactive steps in supporting reforestation and environmental conservation.
“Tree planting is not just a one-day activity; it is a commitment to our future.
Every tree we plant today protects generations to come,” Mr. Laryea noted.
By actively engaging students in the exercise, the Assembly aims to instil a strong sense of environmental responsibility in the younger generation—an approach deemed essential for the long-term success of the Green Ghana initiative.
