The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) says it has completed more than half of the corridor-clearing works for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, bringing the flagship infrastructure project a step closer to the construction phase.

According to the latest progress update, engineers had cleared 89.5 kilometres of the designated route as of June 25, 2026, representing 50.9 per cent of the total 175.6-kilometre corridor earmarked for the expressway.

Project Coordinator and Manager, Colonel Alex Twumasi, said the military engineering team was assigned to clear and strip a 120-metre-wide right of way to prepare the site for the commencement of the road project.

He explained that the corridor-clearing exercise was scheduled to take 20 weeks, adding that the team had surpassed the halfway mark after just nine weeks of work.

Col. Twumasi expressed confidence that the remaining 86.1 kilometres would be completed within the next 13 weeks, keeping the project on course to meet its target timeline.

The corridor-clearing exercise is regarded as a key preparatory stage, providing the necessary access for contractors before full-scale construction begins.

When completed, the Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to transform road transport between Ghana's two largest cities by reducing travel time, improving the movement of goods and passengers, and easing traffic congestion along the existing highway.

Government has identified the project as one of its major transport infrastructure priorities aimed at strengthening national connectivity and supporting economic growth.
