GRA intensifies efforts to educate public on voluntary tax compliance
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says it is intensifying efforts to educate the public on voluntary tax compliance.
Interacting with media practitioners in Accra, Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong noted that a better understanding of the country’s tax system will encourage citizens to fulfil their tax obligations.
According to him, the newly launched nationwide Sustained Tax Education Programme and Modified Taxation Scheme are aimed at deepening public awareness of existing taxes and procedures to promote voluntary compliance.
Mr. Sarpong explained that the Sustained Tax Education Programme is a three-year initiative designed to educate Ghanaians on their tax responsibilities, the importance of paying taxes, and how tax revenues are utilised for national development.
He emphasised that improved public understanding of tax laws and obligations will encourage more people to voluntarily file their tax returns and make timely payments.
He added that increased voluntary compliance will enable the government to raise the necessary domestic revenue to support national transformation, including infrastructure, schools, and hospitals.
Mr. Sarpong further called on all citizens and residents to make an effort to understand the importance of voluntarily declaring and paying the correct taxes.
Touching on the new tax reforms announced in the 2026 Budget, he explained that the reforms aim to simplify the tax system and motivate taxpayers to comply.
He noted that the government has reduced the VAT rate from 21.9% to 20%, a move expected to offer relief to individuals and businesses.
He added that the removal of the 6% non-deductible portion of VAT will lower business costs, enhance profitability, and potentially allow for reduced prices for consumers.
In addition, the VAT registration threshold has been increased from GH¢200,000 to GH¢750,000, allowing small businesses sufficient room to grow before being required to register for VAT.
