Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has completed the replacement of weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines following a maintenance exercise that began on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

The company said the works were completed on schedule despite technical and operational challenges encountered during the exercise.

Following the completion of the works, water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.

GWL, however, cautioned that the restoration of water supply would be gradual as the transmission lines and reservoirs are filled and operating pressures progressively rebuilt.

“Barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers are expected to receive water as the system stabilises,” the company said in a statement.

The company stressed that the resumption of production at the Kpong Treatment Plant did not mean a return to continuous water supply in all affected communities.

It said its Water Demand Management and rationing programme remained in effect to ensure the equitable distribution of available water.

“Customers are therefore encouraged to continue observing their usual rationing schedules,” GWL said, while appealing for continued patience as the network is recharged, reservoirs replenished and water pressure restored.

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, who inspected the works at various stages, commended the engineers, contractors, maintenance team and technical personnel for their dedication and professionalism in completing the exercise on schedule.

He particularly acknowledged the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams, for their leadership and commitment.

Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the works demonstrated “the value of teamwork, technical expertise, strong coordination and committed leadership” in addressing critical infrastructure challenges.

He also expressed appreciation to the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG technical team for their support during the exercise.

According to him, the ECG team worked closely with Ghana Water Ltd personnel, including through the night, to address critical electrical and operational requirements and facilitate the timely resumption of water production at Kpong.

Mr Mutawakilu further thanked the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams and other stakeholders for their contributions to the intervention.

GWL also expressed appreciation to customers and residents in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions for their patience and cooperation during the maintenance exercise.

The company assured the public that the transmission line was being closely monitored as water supply was progressively restored.

Ghana Water Ltd said it remained committed to proactive maintenance, infrastructure modernisation and improving water supply.
