Ghana announces requirements for citizenship applications by historic diasporans
The Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, has announced detailed requirements and procedures for obtaining Ghanaian citizenship by historic diasporans.
In a public service announcement issued to prospective applicants, the Office outlined eligibility criteria, required documentation, applicable fees, and the application process, urging applicants to carefully review the information as all fees paid are non-refundable.
According to the announcement, only persons aged 18 years and above are eligible to apply.
Applicants are required to submit a completed application form, a birth certificate, the bio-data page of a valid passport, and proof of legal residence in Ghana, including a two-year residence permit.
Additional requirements include police clearance or criminal records certificates from both the applicant’s home country and Ghana, evidence of strong ties to Ghana, and DNA proof to support Ghanaian descent.
The application attracts a citizenship fee of GHS25,000, along with an administrative processing fee of GHS1,500.
The application process will begin with the submission of all required documents and payment of the GHS1,500 administrative fee at the designated administrative centre at the World Trade Centre, Accra, from February 2 to February 6, 2026, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted via email or phone and invited to pay the citizenship application fee of GHS25,000 at the Ministry of the Interior.
Authorities cautioned that fees must not be paid to any other individuals or institutions.
Following the vetting process, qualified applicants will participate in a one-day citizenship orientation class.
Successful applicants will then receive email invitations from the Diaspora Affairs Office to attend the Ghana Citizenship Induction Ceremony.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for March 5, 2026, and will be presided over by President John Dramani Mahama. Further details regarding the ceremony are expected to be communicated in due course.
The Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office expressed optimism about welcoming successful applicants as citizens of Ghana, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the global African diaspora.
