The Minister for Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, has signed a debt restructuring agreement with Belgium on behalf of Ghana as part of the country’s ongoing external debt restructuring programme.

The agreement forms part of efforts by the government to restore economic stability following the severe financial crisis that hit Ghana between 2022 and 2023, which led to a debt default at the time.

Dr. Forson noted that the country has since begun witnessing a significant economic recovery, with the government implementing stronger fiscal management systems aimed at preventing a recurrence of the crisis.

According to the Finance Minister, the agreement with Belgium marks the eighth deal Ghana has concluded with members of the Official Creditor Committee under the external debt restructuring programme.

He expressed gratitude to the Government of Belgium for its cooperation and support during the process.

Dr. Forson also extended appreciation to the Belgian Ambassador to Ghana, Carole van Eyll, for her role in strengthening the partnership between the two countries.

The debt restructuring programme forms a key component of Ghana’s broader strategy to restore debt sustainability and support the country’s economic recovery.
