Gov't begins work on 10-year flood management master plan for Greater Accra
The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, under the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has begun processes to develop a comprehensive 10-Year Flood Management Master Plan aimed at addressing the persistent flooding challenges in the capital.
As part of the initiative, the GARID Project has engaged the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee alongside key sector stakeholders to kick-start the design of the long-term flood management strategy for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area(GAMA).
The proposed master plan is expected to provide a coordinated and sustainable framework for flood risk reduction, drainage improvement, and climate resilience, bringing together the roles of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies(MDAs) involved in flood control and urban development.
Officials say the engagement is intended to ensure strong inter-agency collaboration and alignment of policies, while incorporating technical expertise and lessons from previous flood management interventions.
Flooding remains a major concern in Accra, particularly during the rainy season, often leading to loss of lives, destruction of property, and disruption of economic activities.
The development of a long-term flood management master plan is therefore seen as a critical step towards mitigating the impact of floods and building a more resilient capital.
The GARID Project is being implemented to strengthen urban resilience and improve infrastructure in flood-prone communities, with the 10-Year Flood Management Master Plan expected to guide investments and interventions across Greater Accra over the next decade.
