Gov't repatriates displaced Ghanaians from Côte d’Ivoire following demolition exercise
The Government of Ghana has begun the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals from Côte d’Ivoire following a large-scale demolition exercise carried out by Ivorian authorities that left many residents displaced.
As part of the exercise, 228 affected Ghanaians safely arrived in Ghana on Thursday under a special consular intervention coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry said the operation was undertaken to ensure the protection, safety and welfare of stranded Ghanaian citizens and to facilitate the return of both the affected individuals and their personal belongings.
According to the Ministry, the repatriation effort forms part of the government's commitment to providing consular support and assistance to Ghanaians facing distress situations abroad.
Officials indicated that arrangements are ongoing to facilitate the return of the remaining affected nationals as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to individuals and groups who brought the matter to its attention, enabling swift intervention on behalf of the affected citizens.
It also commended Ghana's diplomatic mission in Abidjan for its role in coordinating the operation and engaging with the Ivorian authorities to ensure the safe return of the displaced Ghanaians.
The Ministry further acknowledged the cooperation of the Ivorian authorities and welcomed assurances regarding compensation for those affected by the demolition exercise.
Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Ghanaian citizens abroad and ensuring that those impacted by unforeseen circumstances receive the necessary support and assistance.
