'Great figure of unity': Akufo-Addo pays tribute to late Dagbon Overlord Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid tribute to the late Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, describing him as a "great figure of unity, strength, and enduring legacy."
The tribute follows the customary announcement from the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi notifying the public of the passing of the traditional ruler.
In a statement shared on X, Akufo-Addo highlighted the late overlord’s pivotal role in resolving the long-standing "Dagbon Crisis" during his time as the Chief of Savelugu (Yoo Naa).
The resolution of the conflict eventually led to his ascension to the Dagbon throne during Akufo-Addo’s tenure as president.
"He and the two younger princes at the time, with mutual respect and affection, accepted my advice towards the implementation of the special solution to the special circumstances of the Dagbon Kingdom at the time," Akufo-Addo stated.
The former president recalled the personal honour of being conferred with the title 'Naa Abudani' by the Yaa-Naa in 2020.
The title was presented in Yendi during the celebration of the first Damba Festival following the King's enskinment, in recognition of Akufo-Addo’s efforts toward the Dagbon reconciliation process.
Akufo-Addo noted that the late overlord's reign was defined by a resurgence of pride, unity, and cultural renaissance across the kingdom.
He urged the chiefs, kingmakers, and elders of Dagbon to preserve this legacy by ensuring a smooth and peaceful transition of power.
"It is reassuring to note that a regent has already been successfully enskinned," he added, calling on Ghanaians to offer their support to the regent and the people of Dagbon during the mourning period.
Concluding the statement, the former president and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, extended their deepest condolences to the royal family, chiefs, and the people of the Dagbon Kingdom.
