Nana Agyeiwaa Baffoe-Bonnie Michaels, a 22-year-old law student, has announced her intention to contest the Manhyia South parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2028 elections.

Speaking at a press conference at the organisation's Ashanti Regional office in Kumasi, Michaels declared she will run on the ticket of the Base Movement Ghana, presenting a vision for the constituency centred on structural development, economic empowerment, and active representation.

According to Michaels, her decision to run was driven by years of witnessing and experiencing the challenges confronting residents of the constituency.

“I understand the struggles of the people because I have lived through them. It is time for a new kind of leadership that listens, serves and delivers,” she said.

Michaels identified some of the major challenges currently facing Manhyia South that she intends to address:

- Economic and Skills Development: Tackling youth unemployment, providing support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and addressing inadequate skills and vocational training opportunities.

- Social Services: Bridging gaps in healthcare delivery and improving poor educational infrastructure.

- Infrastructure and Sanitation: Improving poor roads, addressing inadequate drainage systems, and resolving local sanitation challenges.

- Community Welfare and Security: Addressing security concerns, combating digital exclusion, establishing sports and recreational facilities, and resolving the weak citizen engagement of elected leaders.

- Empowerment: Providing targeted support for women and girls.

Expressing confidence in the future of the constituency, she stated that Manhyia South could become a place where young people have opportunities, women are economically empowered, businesses flourish, and communities thrive.

“The time has come for a new generation of leadership that listens, serves and delivers. Together, we can build a stronger Manhyia South and a stronger Ghana,” she added.

Challenge to the Political Duopoly

Michaels is campaigning under the banner of the Base Movement Ghana, a socio-political organisation officially launched in Accra in 2026. Founded by Dr George Oti Bonsu — a businessman and former financier of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) — and inspired by businessman and former NPP flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, the movement aims to challenge the traditional political duopoly of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP.

The organisation operates on four core pillars: industrialisation, youth employment, tourism, and agriculture.

The Manhyia South seat is currently held by NPP Member of Parliament (MP) Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who succeeded the previous NPP MP, former Education and Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Agyemang.
