La Pleasure Beach gone as joint security personnel assist demolition exercise
There was a near-chaos at the La Pleasure beach today as a demolition exercise was conducted.
The demolition exercise was reportedly carried out as a joint operation involving personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.
According to accounts from workers and eye witnesses, the exercise commenced in the early hours of the morning after some security personnel arrived at the facility at about 4:00 a.m. and ordered residents and workers to vacate the premises.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah who arrived at the scene later in the day, was infuriated by the action as she denied knowledge of the exercise.
Speaking to the media while joining the protesters in the area, the MP said; "What is ongoing at the Labadi Beach, the people of La, as Member of Parliament, we are expressing our displeasure of what is going on here because people are earning their livelihoods here and you cannot say, I mean, you just get up as a hotel, we have given you land to build the Labadi Beach Hotel and now this is the reward of the people."
She claimed government knows nothing about the demolition, stating "it is the Labadi Beach Hotel with their Board Chairman who is leading this exercise. Government has no knowledge about this per my investigations".
The residents and workers at the facility mounted a fierce protest against the exercise but the joint soldiers and police who trooped to the area to ensure the successful completion of the exercise prevented the people's action from resulting in mayhem.
Reasons for the demolition including the authority who ordered for the facility to be razed down are unknown.
