Labadi Beach redevelopment to create modern tourism destination – SSNIT

News
SSNIT to redevelop Labadi beachfront

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has outlined plans to redevelop the Labadi beachfront into a modern leisure and tourism destination with restaurants, beach lounges, wellness facilities, water sports and retail outlets.

The proposed redevelopment is expected to improve the beachfront’s sanitation, security and general environment while unlocking its tourism and economic potential.

The redevelopment follows the longstanding challenges faced by Labadi Beach Hotel in expanding its facilities due to encroachment on its beachfront.

Management of the hotel had sought to secure the area to facilitate expansion but was unsuccessful, prompting it to seek the support of SSNIT, which subsequently engaged National Security to help address the situation.

The encroachment was said to have created operational and reputational challenges including sanitation and waste management concerns for the hotel, security risks affecting guests and visitors and reports of inappropriate and illicit activities in the vicinity.

These conditions, to SSNT and the hotel, undermined the ambience, safety and standards expected of a five-star hospitality establishment and were also inconsistent with the hotel’s position as a premium tourism destination.

The hotel management believed addressing the encroachment was necessary to restore order, protect the hotel’s business environment and create conditions for redevelopment of the beachfront.

Proposed redevelopment

The planned redevelopment project is expected to transform the enclave into a vibrant coastal destination combining hospitality, recreation and entertainment.

The proposed facilities include restaurants, beach lounges, landscaped outdoor spaces, live music, wellness facilities, water sports and retail outlets to attract both local and international visitors.

To SSNIT, the redevelopment would focus on cleaning and restoring the area into a safer, more attractive and properly managed environment while retaining public access to the beach.

The project is expected to commence soon following engagements with stakeholders.

A committee involving relevant stakeholders has been established to review outstanding issues, agree on the necessary arrangements and coordinate the way forward for the redevelopment.

The redevelopment presents an opportunity to move the beachfront from fragmented informal economic activities to a more organised local economy capable of generating employment and supporting businesses in surrounding communities.

The project is expected to create opportunities for the residents to participate in the tourism value chain through employment, local enterprise and the provision of goods and services.

The Trust acknowledged the legitimate interest of the people of La and surrounding communities in the future of the beachfront, given its location within their traditional and residential environment, hence noting that engagement with traditional authorities, community leaders, consultants and residents would be essential to communicating the project’s objectives, addressing concerns and identifying practical opportunities for local participation as well as confronting matters relating to the future use of the beachfront.

As the institution responsible for administering Ghana’s Basic National Social Security Scheme, SSNIT has the duty to safeguard its investments, prevent the loss of value through unauthorised occupation and ensure that its assets were managed to support their long-term value.

This is therefore the reason for SSNIT's involvement in this redevelopment exercise as it is primarily linked to the trust's responsibility to protect and manage assets held in trust for contributors and pensioners.

SSNIT assures the public that the redevelopment will not result in the loss of the beachfront.
