The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has said the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) warned that more rainfall was expected in June and July but was unable to indicate the expected volume of rain ahead of the downpour that caused flooding in Accra.

Speaking on the floods, the minister said GMet only informed the government around midnight on the eve of the heavy rainfall on Monday.

"The Ghana Meteorological Agency warned us to expect more rains in June and July. However, we were only informed around midnight the night before yesterday about yesterday's rainfall. Even then, they couldn't tell us how much rain to expect," Mr Muntaka said, according to Joy News.

The rains which began on Sunday and intensified on Monday have left 12 people dead, seven missing, nearly 500 rescued, many properties ruined, and about 40,000 displaced.

According to Mr Muntaka, Ghana recorded 169mm of rainfall, and a cummulative 593mm in June - the highest monthly rainfall ever in the country's history.

GMet has cautioned the rains will persist this week.
