The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on Baba Ali as its candidate for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.

Confirmation of the decision came from the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Divine Agorhom, during an interview with Accra-based Citi FM. He explained that the choice followed wide-ranging engagements and careful consideration of individuals capable of leading the party’s campaign within the short timeframe available.

According to Mr Agorhom, the party prioritised a candidate with deep roots in the party, strong grassroots appeal and the willingness to actively engage voters across the constituency. He noted that the selected candidate needed to demonstrate loyalty to party structures, accessibility and the capacity to mobilise support through direct community interaction.

He disclosed that after internal deliberations, Baba Ali emerged as the preferred choice, meeting the criteria set by party leadership. Mr Agorhom added that the party is confident in moving forward with him as its flagbearer for the contest.

The regional chairman further highlighted Baba Ali’s long-standing involvement in party activities, describing him as a well-known and dependable figure within the Ayawaso East constituency. He pointed out that Baba Ali has previously served two terms as constituency secretary, a role that earned him broad endorsement from the local party leadership.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is preparing to hold its internal primary on February 7, with six aspirants vying for the slot. Those seeking the party’s nomination include the constituency chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late MP; Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal; Dr Yakubu Azindow; Najib Mohammed Sani; and Salam Daru.

The by-election was triggered by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, who died on January 4, 2026, after a short period of illness.

Party officials believe Baba Ali’s familiarity with the constituency and strong grassroots presence will enhance the NPP’s prospects in the upcoming poll.
