The Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North, Charles Darko Yeboah has waded into the ongoing debate over the National Cathedral project, saying government should not use state resources to finance what he describes as a personal vow.

Speaking in an interview with Class Media Group, Hon. Darko Yeboah said he agrees with President John Dramani Mahama's position on the matter.

According to him, the former President promised God that he would build a cathedral if he won power and therefore it should have remained a personal commitment.

"I believe, as President Mahama said, the cathedral was promised, he promised God that if he wins [he would build it]," he said.

“So I don't think it was necessary for the government to make a personal pledge a government project and take it to conferences everywhere."

The MCE argued that it was unfair for the state to bear the financial burden of the project, especially when other religious groups have built their places of worship without state funding.

He noted that the project has become divisive, adding that even some Christians do not support the idea of government financing it.

"Rather than encouraging government to go and look for funds to finance a cathedral, I disagree with that principle," he stressed.

Hon. Darko Yeboah further described the project as a political gimmick and expressed doubt that the present government will continue with its construction.

"I don't think the present government will agree to continue building the cathedral. If you look at the cost involved, pulling down buildings, the money involved... I don't think it is appropriate to continue," he added.

The National Cathedral project has been one of the most controversial state projects in recent years, with critics questioning its funding and priority.
