Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A-Plus, narrowly avoided being attacked by angry residents of New Winneba after a violent clash in the community left three people dead and several others injured.

The MP had visited the Effutu North District Police Command to get firsthand details of the incident, but his presence apparently provoked residents who had gathered there. They confronted him, prompting security personnel to swiftly intervene and escort him away to prevent the situation from escalating further. The Central Regional Police Command and other security officers were subsequently deployed to secure the MP and restore order at the scene.

The Attack

According to the Ghana Police Service, the violence began at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, when "about 300 irate mob wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba Township."

The police said the group attacked residents and damaged properties, including shops, stores and residences belonging to natives.

Three people have been confirmed dead. The police said, "About 15 injured victims have been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, including an officer, and 3 have been confirmed dead." The violence is believed to have stemmed from a land dispute involving communities within the Gomoa area.

Security Response

Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the violence.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, also deployed a reinforcement team, including two armoured vehicles, from National Police Headquarters to strengthen security operations in the area.

The police said the deployment was intended to "beef up security" and prevent further escalation, adding that "the situation is currently under control." Security personnel remain deployed to maintain peace and prevent further disturbances.

Arrests

The Central Regional Police Command has since said seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.

The Deputy Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, confirmed the arrests to Adom News, saying investigations are ongoing to identify other persons involved.

The circumstances surrounding the clashes and the deaths remain under investigation. The police said, "Full details will be communicated later."
