Authorities in the Northern Region have taken a major step in the fight against drug trafficking after the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) destroyed a large cache of illegal substances valued at more than GHS2.4 million.

The disposal exercise was carried out at Gbalahi Field in Tamale and formed part of NACOC’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on the distribution and use of illicit drugs.

The destroyed items were confiscated during a series of intelligence-led operations conducted with the support of other security agencies.

According to the Commission, the destruction followed a court order issued after the successful prosecution and conviction of individuals connected to the drugs.

Northern Regional Commander, Issahaque Bakari, said the substances included both cannabis and a wide range of synthetic opioids, particularly tramadol products with high dosage levels.

He listed the seized drugs as hundreds of boxes and blisters of Tafrado 120mg, TramaKing, tramadol capsules, and Royal 225mg.

He explained that the law requires all drug exhibits to be destroyed once court proceedings are completed to prevent them from re-entering circulation.

Mr. Bakari also raised concerns about the growing influx of unauthorised tramadol products, noting that many are smuggled into the country through unapproved border routes, especially within the Northern Region.

He warned that such drugs exceed approved medical limits and pose serious health risks.

To strengthen enforcement, NACOC has increased surveillance at key border towns, including Tatale and Saboba, and deployed officers to several districts.

Plans are underway to extend operations to every district in the region.

Aside from arrests and seizures, the Commission says it is prioritising education and rehabilitation.

Young people battling drug addiction have been urged to seek help through NACOC’s counselling and reintegration programmes before facing legal consequences.

NACOC reiterated its commitment to working closely with communities and stakeholders to reduce drug abuse and maintain public safety across the region.
