Police confirm arrest and hospitalisation of Okatakyie following NPP election disturbances
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest and subsequent admission to hospital of political activist Kwame Afrifa Mensah, popularly known as Okatakyie, following a violent disruption during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections.
The incident occurred during the Effiduase Asokore (Efigya Sekyere East) constituency polls held at the SDA Church polling station in Wiamoase. According to law enforcement officials, Okatakyie led a group of approximately 30 heavily built men to the venue, where they clashed with security personnel and actively disrupted the voting process by scattering electoral materials on the ground.
Police officers at the scene swiftly intervened, arresting Okatakyie along with six other suspects. The remaining members of the group fled the scene, and a targeted police operation is underway to track them down.
Prior to the disruption, Okatakyie reportedly claimed that his supporters had been unfairly sidelined from the process and asserted that he had secured a court injunction to halt the polls. However, police authorities clarified that neither the Electoral Commission nor the police administration had been served with any legal notice or court order ordering the suspension of the elections.
Following the security intervention, calm was restored at the venue, allowing voting to resume and conclude peacefully. The Electoral Commission subsequently declared the official results.
Later in the day, Okatakyie and another suspect, identified as 44-year-old Osman Awuni, complained of ill health while in custody. Both men were transported to the Mampong Government Hospital, where they have been admitted for medical treatment under strict police guard.
The police have stated that comprehensive investigations into the disturbance are ongoing.
