Prez. Mahama sends Ghanaian troops to aid Jamaica’s recovery
President John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has described the dispatch of Ghana Army engineers to Jamaica as a demonstration of the strong friendship between Ghana, Jamaica, and the international community.
The deployment follows the recent hurricane that struck the Caribbean nation. The contingent, made up of eight commissioned officers and 45 soldiers, will support efforts to construct temporary shelters and contribute to rebuilding damaged infrastructure.
Speaking at a send-off ceremony held at the Jubilee Lounge of the Kotoka International Airport, President Mahama said the mission reflects Ghana’s commitment to global humanitarian support and is expected to further deepen relations with Jamaica. He urged the personnel to conduct themselves in a manner that brings pride to the nation.
The President reminded the team that their behaviour overseas would mirror the character and professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces. He stressed that they represent Ghana on the international stage and encouraged them to demonstrate discipline, integrity, teamwork, and respect for the local population and authorities, while ensuring their own safety throughout the mission.
President Mahama also expressed appreciation to the United States government, particularly President Donald Trump, for facilitating the transportation of the troops. He noted that logistical challenges initially threatened the mission, but U.S. support in providing airlift capacity made the deployment possible.
The engineering team is expected to return home after completing its humanitarian assignment in Jamaica.
