The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has disclosed that the ministry is seeking approval to recruit approximately 1,000 additional workers to bolster operations and tackle staffing deficits across its agencies.

Appearing before Parliament’s Select Committee on Economy and Development, the minister explained that the request was submitted by the ministry’s Chief Director following concerns over increasing workforce demands within the sector.

Mr. Agbodza noted that the creation of new administrative regions has significantly stretched the capacity of road agencies, as staffing levels have remained largely unchanged despite the expansion.

He said critical units, particularly engineering and quality assurance departments, are facing mounting pressure due to inadequate personnel.

According to the minister, the shortage of technical staff is affecting the effective supervision, monitoring, and execution of road infrastructure projects, especially in the newly established regions where institutional capacity remains limited.

He emphasized that strengthening the workforce is essential to improving project oversight, maintaining construction standards, and enhancing service delivery across the road sector.

Mr. Agbodza assured the committee that measures are being pursued to address the staffing challenges and improve the operational efficiency of the ministry and its agencies.
