A major road traffic accident involving three vehicles have caused a complete blockade on the Accra-Kumasi-bound section of the N6 Highway at Birimso on Monday, August 3, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded and disrupting traffic on one of the country's busiest highways.

The collision, which occurred in the early hours of the day, involved a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck and a private saloon vehicle. 

The impact of the crash left the vehicles strewn across the highway, making the road impassable and resulting in a lengthy traffic congestion stretching several kilometres.

Following reports of the incident, personnel from the Ghana Police Service led by officers of the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) based in Kibi were dispatched to the scene to manage traffic and coordinate rescue and recovery efforts.

To minimise the disruption, police introduced temporary traffic diversions for motorists travelling on the highway. 

Vehicles heading towards Accra were redirected through Kibi at Nsutam while those travelling to Kumasi were diverted at Apedwa to ease congestion and facilitate the removal of the damaged vehicles.

Police urged motorists to remain patient, comply with traffic directives and use the designated alternative routes until normal traffic flow is restored.

Although the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established, investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. 

Authorities had not, at the time of filing this report, confirmed whether there were any fatalities or injuries.

Recovery teams continued efforts to clear the wreckage from the highway as police worked to restore normal movement along the critical Accra-Kumasi transport corridor.
