President John Dramani Mahama has renewed Ghana’s call for Africa to be granted permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council, describing the continent’s exclusion as a “historical injustice” that must be corrected.

Speaking during German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s state visit to Ghana, President Mahama noted that Africa, with 54 countries and over 1.4 billion people, remained the only inhabited continent without a permanent seat on the world’s most influential decision-making body.

He commended Germany for its consistent support for United Nations (UN) reforms that sought to make the security council more inclusive and representative.

President Mahama also urged the international community to reaffirm its commitment to multilateralism and reject the rise of unilateral protectionism.

He warned that undermining established global frameworks could “plunge the world into instability, inequality, and conflict”.

The president described President Steinmeier’s visit as “substantive and deeply symbolic,” saying it reaffirmed the shared aspirations of Ghana and Germany for a partnership built on equality, mutual respect, and shared benefits.

“Ghana has found not just a partner, but a friend who recognises that Africa’s development is crucial to global peace and prosperity,” he stated, extending warm appreciation to the German president and his delegation for their continued support and solidarity.

President Steinmeier is expected to continue his visit with engagements with young IT professionals in Accra and a trip to the Ashanti Region.
