Weija Water Treatment Plant to shut down for scheduled maintenance today Dec. 19
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a planned interruption in operations at the Weija Water Treatment Plant on Friday, December 19, 2025, to allow for essential maintenance works.
The company explained that the plant will be shut down from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which water production and supply from the facility will be halted temporarily.
According to GWL, the maintenance forms part of ongoing measures aimed at strengthening the reliability and safety of water supply, especially ahead of the Christmas festivities. Normal production and distribution are expected to resume immediately after the exercise is completed.
As a result of the shutdown, residents in several areas are likely to experience water shortages. The affected communities include Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija-Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka Lapaz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, as well as nearby localities.
Management of GWL assured the public that all the required personnel, equipment, and logistics have been put in place to ensure the work is completed within the scheduled period.
Speaking on the exercise, Managing Director of GWL, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, said the maintenance is vital for protecting the nation’s water systems and enhancing service quality.
“This exercise is necessary to maintain the strength of our water infrastructure and improve service delivery. We are fully prepared and committed to completing the work on time,” he stated.
GWL has therefore encouraged customers in the affected areas to store adequate water in advance to reduce the impact of the temporary shutdown.
The company also expressed regret for any inconvenience the situation may cause and called on the public for patience and cooperation as efforts continue to improve water supply services nationwide.
