Wusuta Traditional Leaders raise concerns over Hosuta–Vakpo road construction
The Asafoatsega of the Wusuta Traditional Area, Asafoatsega Kuklui, has appealed to the government and relevant road authorities to urgently inspect the ongoing construction of the Hosuta–Vakpo road over concerns that the project may not be following the required engineering standards.
Speaking on behalf of the Wusuta Dzobi Youth Association, the traditional leader said residents are worried about the quality of work being carried out and fear the road may deteriorate prematurely if the current construction practices are not reviewed.
According to him, the contractor commenced work by clearing the road corridor with a loader instead of a grader, a method the community believes is inconsistent with standard road construction procedures.
He stated that although residents initially gave the contractor the benefit of the doubt, their concerns deepened when gravel was spread on the road and compacted without any visible drainage or earthworks being undertaken.
"We have witnessed several road construction projects over the years, and this is not the usual process. There has been no drainage work, no gutters, yet gravel is already being laid and compacted," he stated.
Asafoatsega Kuklui noted that several sections of the Hosuta–Vakpo road require proper drainage infrastructure to prevent erosion and flooding during the rainy season. However, he said these critical components appear to have been overlooked in the execution of the project.
While acknowledging that members of the community are not road construction experts, he maintained that the sequence of work being undertaken raises legitimate concerns that deserve immediate technical assessment.
He therefore appealed to engineers and technical officers from the relevant government agencies to visit the project site, conduct an independent inspection, and ensure that the contractor strictly complies with the approved specifications.
The traditional leader stressed that the appeal is not intended to obstruct the project but to ensure that public funds are used efficiently and that the completed road provides durable and long-term benefits to residents of Hosuta, Vakpo and adjoining communities.
The Wusuta Dzobi Youth Association has consequently called on the Ministry responsible for Roads and Highways, as well as all supervising authorities, to intervene without delay to guarantee that the Hosuta–Vakpo road project is executed to the required standard and delivers lasting value to the communities it is intended to serve.
